The Weaselman Cometh…

Hi All,

So here we are again. I see you all decided to come back to visit Serendipity Farm this week so I guess my post with the photos at the end can’t have been all that bad. I am going to mix a few images through the post and put the majority at the end in a vain attempt to satisfy you all without polarising some of my dear constant (bolshie) readers in the process. It’s all about soothing you savage beasts these days and I am, as ever, your humble servant. Now that we have that obsequious and most belly scraping of introductory paragraphs out of the way, what have we been up to this week eh? (Actually, scrap that…due to the terrible weather conditions and the severe dearth of blog photos you are just going to have to live with them in the post today 😉 )

This is a happy narf…read on to find out why and note the dirt on the side of my face after doing battle with Brunhilda…again…

Well it’s 4.48am and I decided that I would sacrifice my RSS Feed Reader to the great unknown this morning in order to bring you a little slice of Serendipity down South and in the close proximity to Antarctica. Most of the time we don’t think about Antarctica but come mid-winter and it tends to be right up there in our thoughts. I opened up my email this morning and whilst tossing things into the junk mail bin and sifting through the paltry pile of “good” stuff, I found an email from a permaculture maestro who lives in the U.S. that I had actually signed up to and decided to read it. Within 2 minutes I was very excited by a couple of the links that he had put in his email and had headed off and spent 10 minutes discovering new and exciting things. Have you ever heard of a “wofati” house? It’s a most interesting variation of an underground bunker without having to live underground. It takes care of the heating and cooling of your house by having a huge load of soil banked up against the rear of the house. Interesting but not as interesting as the little debris house that I saw. “Debris house narf?” yes…debris house.

Earl was very proud to have urinated this tree down last week but people have been poaching the trunk for their fires and he is displeased...

Earl was very proud to have urinated this tree down last week but people have been poaching the trunk for their fires and he is displeased…

Now before you reach for your phones to have me committed I need to tell you that I am not going to build myself a debris house to sit in and contemplate my navel for the foreseeable future any day soon. Why would I do that when I already have Serendipity Farm house for that purpose eh? The reason I got excited about them is that a debris house is something bolshie using something that no-one wants to create something that will serve a purpose in a most interesting and delightful way. Say you are out in the woods…yeah, you, couch potato that you are, “out in the woods” (for the sake of this experiment let’s just run with “you” in “the woods” no matter how laughable or impractical/impossible that idea is OK? 😉 ) and say you got lost (highly likely if you live on the couch and don’t venture out into nature on a regular basis) and it was winter and you needed someplace to kip till they found you. Now I would rather be proactive about stacking up a little bush house of debris to wait out my time (complete with my own little debris couch) than just huddle under a shrub in the cold. I guess what I am saying is that things like this excite me because someone out there had a great idea to use what no-one else wanted to get something that they needed.

I guess what excites me most about these ideas is that they are entirely possible and sometimes we all need someone to dangle a carrot of possibility in front of our noses to get us galvanised for action. I have been the opposite of galvanised for some time now. I have been in active narfish hibernation inside the comfy confines of Chez Serendipity. I won’t tell a fib, I am entirely content with this situation and all talk of  “going outside”  is met with stern twitching, measured reasoning (“paper, rock, scissors I WIN…you go…”) and a degree of loin girding and dashing hither and thither that is completely unbecoming to a 50 year old woman. Yesterday our power went out and we took the 2 hour space of time before it came back on to zoom out and walk the dogs between rain squalls and wind gusts and I ladled my not inconsiderable derriere off the couch and trundled myself off to muck out my chook coop. “Pourquoi?” I hear you asking, when I have just admitted to being part wintery sloth? Well, the weasel man came you see…

NOW I have your attention! “The Weaselman?!” yup…The Weaselman. Well, he isn’t really half man half weasel but I have my suspicions. Let me back up a bit and give you the back story so that you don’t have nightmares tonight OK? (Here you get those wavy lines that denote going back in time but that I can’t quite replicate all that well in words…)” In the beginning there was God”…err…maybe I went back a bit far, might fast forward a few millennia to a bit closer to my existence…how about “Saturday 26th July 2014”…sounds like a good day to visit Serendipity Farm…Well Stevie-boy and narf7 have been increasingly alarmed at the size of our chook population on Serendipity Farm. We saved about 40 baby chooks from the quoll a while back that killed their mothers and took quite a few of their brethren. They were raised (I would love to say “by wolves” here but that simply wouldn’t be true…) by a bolshie old nana hen we like to call “Goldy” who looked after them admirably and who cared for them like they were her own.

It started to become apparent about 3 weeks ago, that we had quite a few roosters in their midst. We already had about 5 larger roosters that Stevie-boy knew that he was going to have to “deal with” (don’t ask my vegan friends…don’t ask…) in the immediate future but in the groundswell of “The 40” (for want of a better word for the orphans) there was an alarming dichotomy between the population that signified an overrepresentation of roosters. It was both alarming and disheartening because we saved them from the quoll dammit! It would appear that the quoll may have been doing us a favour…

So what’s a narf and a Stevie-boy to do when faced with a growing population of roosters that were starting to eat them out of house and home? It turns out we were doing what we usually do which was a combination of being stoic (buying more food) and sticking our heads, ostrich like, into the sand. Stevie-boy has been doing a bit of work with a friend down the road and our friend phoned Steve up and asked him if another friend (lots of “friends” out in the country, like “aunties” and “uncles” when you are kids 😉 ) could come up and have a look at our chooks as he was after a few more hens for his flock. We keep waving free chooks all over the place and haven’t had many takers yet because at the time we couldn’t be sure what was a hen and what was a rooster so our answer was “SURE…bring him up”.

Stevie-boy would like it to be known that he loves beer battered fish and chips night as he gets wine AND beer at the same time ;)

It turns out our flock was too hybrid to be appealing to the “friend” but while he was wandering around insulting our flock and their lack of pedigree he said “you have a bit of a rooster problem here don’t you”…err, “YOU THINK?!” I guess that reinforced that he knew his roosters from his hens.

After a bit more wandering around he said “tell you what, if you don’t want these roosters, leave them locked in the coop overnight, I will come back tomorrow with some crates and will take them away for you”. Turns out The Weaselman (yup, you were right! 10 points Sherlock!) was an expert chook man (as most weasels are) and had a large flock of his own, a pole with a hook on the end for rooster hooking and the ability to get a couple of large crates into our coop cram packed with bolshie and hungry chooks that were hell bent on being let out for the day.

The weather has been wet, wild and windy here in Northern Tasmania and this is what our deck looked like this morning in a brief moment of quiet respite from the storms

Roll on Sunday and The Weaselman came promptly at 10am like he said he would. The chook coop was humming as I usually let them all out at 7am and their stomachs were starting to tell them that something was amiss. I stayed inside with the boys because The Weaselman had brought his wife AND his dog and our boys wanted to teach it all about the ways of Serendipity Farm and I don’t think the poor moth eaten sock under the bed could stand the litigation so I shovelled them baying and howling inside to wait out the rooster apocalypse (“chicken? Moi?!” …”bluck…”) It turns out The Weaselman is a true pro. I am SO in awe of his chook prowess! He is small and thin and slinky and not only managed to get himself and his large crates into a somewhat small coop with 60 angry, hungry chooks and one bolshie very LOUD duck, but he hooked 33 roosters in about 15 minutes with minimal fuss and hardly any noise at all. Stevie-boy came back inside and said “they are gone”. I couldn’t believe it! The man is both a true weasel and a pro.

Steve was most impressed with the insect activity on this bit of bark till he realised that it had blown off an old placard we had leaning on the shed saying "Stop the Pulp Mill!" It would seem that WE were the insects that decorated that ;)

Apparently, he managed to find 2 hens that met his criteria for “good enough”  in our humble mixed flock and Stevie-boy gave them to him gladly. I had already told him to take any hens that he wanted and the hens that he chose were pretty but airheaded so good luck to you Weaselman on that front. The best of my hens had refused point blank to go into the coop that day and was hunkered down and hiding out in the bush when The Weaselman came and escaped his eagle eyes. We only discovered her subterfuge when we noticed her wandering around outside the coop later on in the day looking at her 25 sisters and big yin and duckie and wondering how she could get her bolshie derriere into the coop to get herself some grain.

So Serendipity Farm is quiet. No chooks racing around, no roosters waiting to pounce, no rounding up, leaping on or molestation going on and a sweet peaceful calm has returned. The Weaselman had offered to give us back half of the roosters cleaned and ready for the pot (he is a man of many weasel like talents apparently) but after thinking it through between us, we decided to decline. He was doing us a HUGE favour and deserved to be rewarded accordingly and besides, it would have felt a bit like eating our neighbours…

LOVE this paint job :)

LOVE this paint job 🙂

What else have we done here on Serendipity Farm? Well we found a great recipe for batter that is naturally vegan that involves ¾ of a cup of Self raising (yes you people from the U.S. we Aussies call it “Self-raising” not “Self-rising” 😉 ) flour and 150ml of fizzy beer. That’s it, that’s all. Mix the two together and dip whatever you want into the batter and fry in hot oil till crispy, crunchy, golden and heavenly delicious. I was going to have something elaborate for my rapidly approaching birthday but changed my mind. Stevie-boy is an excellent cook and makes my birthday meal every year including a most awesome cake (yes, I will take pictures…) and we had been wading through Escoffier looking for suitable delicacies when we both decided (after tasting a fried battered onion ring in this mix) to bollock off the elitist grub and go with the fried flow. We will be balancing it out with Japanese élan so you don’t have to worry about narf croaking from a heart attack on her 51st birthday and Stevie-boy is poring over Google searching out “Bento Box” recipes complete with delicious quick pickles, tempura veggies, lovely sticky rice and seaweed salad, a meal fit for a king but eaten by queen narf of Serendipity Farm with an awesome slice of vegan sticky dense cake for dessert. What a lucky narf I am!

So here we are again…at the end of a blog post and ready to wave goodbye to each other again over the miles. Have a great week everyone. Please make the most of what you have, where you have it. Don’t look at what other people have and feel “less than”. You likely have more than enough for you and your world and when we stop and look around us we suddenly realise that our lives are pretty wonderful just the way that they are. Who needs a yacht or a condo in the South of France or Escoffier on their birthday menu when you can have your family, your friends, your pets, your favourite fry up and an amazing sticky cake to end the day in a most fitting and satisfying way. Viva la vie folks…”VIVA LA VIE!” : )

(Although…that yacht is pretty sweet…) 😉

I love that bowl Fran. Better hide it on my next visit lol. The weaselman sounds like a clever weasel. What a relief to be rid of all those roosters! I love the colour of that yacht (boat?) so sunny and happy looking 🙂 . I like the sound of your birthday meal, just send Stevie boy over the next week for me please 😀 . Can’t believe it is nearly a year since I winged my way over to you for our 50th, my time sure the hell does fly! Heard it had been very windy and wet your way. Another lady from Tassie on my fb lost her patio to the wind. Hope you guys stay safe and warm and cosy. x

Yeah that bowl is ALL MINE! 😉 We had a blast last year and Hobart was awesome :). That boat was old and neglected for years before they spruced it up and repainted it. Just the bright sunny thing that we needed here as all week it has been rainy squalls, high winds and battening down all of the hatches. Luckily Serendipity Farm is regularly buffeted by wind so everything seems to be OK at the moment. Get Bruce on the case with that beer batter…SO easy and you don’t even have to dip things into flour first! Perfect every time and you can add herbs and chilli etc. to it to customise it. Crunchiest most delicious batter I have ever made and it stays crispy. I am in awe of both the Weaselman (and he is forever in my gratitude) AND that batter. Happy birthday Kymmy and have a blast whatever you do. Tell Bruce to stock up on the good stuff and raise a glass for your old mate in Tassie 🙂

No problem on the “stock up on the good stuff” because we went to the Good Food and Wine Show on the holidays 🙂 Lots of good stuff lol. Will be thinking of you on your birthday, still can’t believe how quick that has gone. Remember I said that my 50thy was in Tassie so that didn’t count.. so guess I’m turning 50 this year 😀 ! Have a great day x

Lovely post – glad the roosters were removed so efficiently (and, no doubt, dispatched the same way).
Your last paragraph is so true – there are many people in the world who are lacking, but most of us reading this will be surrounded by abundance… at the moment I feel particularly rich in vegetables, friends and qualifications, having just received the written confirmation that I have passed my Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design – yay me!

Hi, roosters are wonderful characters and it is a shame only one or two are needed at a time. I hope the rooster catcher and his family enjoy your roosters. I guess they have a big freezer to store them.

More damaging winds are forecast for northern Tasmania so I hope you continue to escape any serious dramas with your home. Perhaps travel is restricted if the winds are too violent.

Having fried food and cake sounds like a good choice to me for my birthday 🙂 The Japanese just gives it a bit of class 😉 I love roosters as well. They tend to get tamer than hens and will take food from your hand. I hated having to dispatch them but 33 roosters were just not feasible here and our neighbours (who are conveniently away in Canada at the moment) would have returned to bedlam and would have hired hitmen to do us in. We are hunkered down studying here and the only thing (at the moment) that has put us out is power outages so we can’t study but then I get to crochet by the fire so it’s a win-win situation for me 🙂

Another delightful post 🙂 We can’t have a rooster here because of our proximity to neighbours and I am glad…we both know full well we couldn’t handle the rooster population born from breeding the chooks ourselves. Better for us to just acquire 6 month old chickens when we need them. We can’t kill them or eat them, we are hopeless life-stylers in that area lol, no matter how much sense it makes!!!

I’m starting to think you need to cobble together your posts and seek publication – or whatever one does in these cases. It would be a book guaranteed to give, at the very least, a hearty chuckle a page and probably a series of chuckles and a hearty guffaw 🙂 I’d buy it!

Go the weasel-man he did a great job! Love the pants, the blue bowl [who doesn’t love a blue bowl?] and the photo of the happy narf especially! I tried mushy peas once. That was enough – but I am so tempted to have a go at that beer batter just because it looks so crisp and crunchy and is only two ingredients …… the fact that I would have to purchase the beer and the flour and the oil for frying does not really deter me – and is the only reason I don’t get to it immediately.

Even though I live much closer to Antarctica than you in Northern Tasmania do, we have enjoyed a few summery-like days. Today, while still a respectable 14+C,is decidedly blustery and Siddy and I were blown very quickly along the first half of our walk, bent into it for the next half and virtually crawled home the last half 🙂

I’m quite excited about your birthday and we here in the Riviera of Antarctica, are practising a rousing chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ to sing soon. If you listen carefully when soon comes, you may hear us. I am the pitchy tenor-soprano with words, Siddy is the high pitched yap in the chorus and Orlando is the quiet stillness that runs beneath.

We all send our varying forms of hugs etc for soon xoxo 😀

Why shucks Ms Pauline you are making me blush 🙂 Thank you for your rousing chorus but its a little premature…soon isn’t yet ;). Antarctica is a state of mind on Serendipity Farm. I had the North Pole today as the phone lines got squished by trees falling, a big tree fell down in the garden in front of the house and the wind was alarming at the least and slightly terrifying at it’s best. We have been promised more of the same so I am hoping that nothing else falls down or squishes anything vital. After having to deal with an obstreperous Indian lady for 45 minutes who was hell bent on us NOT reporting our phone line down, we were a bit exhausted and are only now recovering our qi thanks to some white wine and Brunhilda’s basking warmth. NO idea when the phone will be returned as they have to get around to coming and taking a look but at least we still have the net for the moment as apparently the net only needs 1 line and phones need 2 (LOVE you Google for your answering capabilities 🙂 ) so I learned something today. I also learned that I like wine 🙂

Does this go to show you can have the www without a landline – I know we have packages here that offer that and I really must look into it! Balmy 24C here today – but there is a strong easterly a blowin’! 🙂

We need a landline, just we only have 1 of the 2 strings that they provide for the net to work. We lucked out and didn’t lose both strings 😉 You can get naked DSL so if you don’t need a house phone you can just get the net and not a phone. The only reason that we have the phone is so that Steve can phone his mum in the U.K. 🙂

Wow, I can feel the rooster relief across the ocean, thanks to this lovely post. Yay for the Weaselman and you. I want to hug himself myself. There were legions of roosters at the farm we stayed at for 2 months. A great place, but I’m happy not to have that many roosters nearby in the a.m., let me tell you. Just one across the road now. Not too bad.

Love your still lifes. You are getting a good photographic eye, there. A yellow ship — vs. submarine. 🙂

Maybe your birthday preparations go well. Great tush, by the way. 🙂 xxoo

LOL! It is, indeed, a GREAT tush 😉 Most well fed and rested over the past few months :). If I had a few of those delicious white pineapples I reckon it might be a little less GREAT and a bit more able to fit back into the tank but I don’t think I can get in there any more as it’s almost full of water :). I loved that yellow ship as it had been neglected in dry dock for years and they finally got around to giving it a new lease of life and it shone itself down the river with pride 🙂 Roosters all gone except for The Big Yin who is still confused as to why there are so many hens and no roosters (he was never very bright 😉 ) HUGS from blustery Sidmouth 🙂

Do you know the weaselman, the weaselman, the weaselman.Do you know the weaselman who catches roosters fast. 😉
Reading that post had the tune to Muffinman playing over and over in my head. lol

Those daks look great on you btw. 🙂 I’m so glad you like them.

Nice work Steve with the gutters and that delish sounding dinner for a certain Narfish birthday.

What’s it worth to ya for me to keep the date to myself? 😉 Ah, yes. I just remembered that mine is in the not too distant future too so probably mutual blackmail I guess. Zipped up tight my friend! 😉

HAHAHAHAHA! Yes Ms Jessie and you have more of a vested interest in me keeping shtum than I do! 😉 I love the muffin/roosterman song. It has just been transfered from your brain to mine. Did you see that we have the net for the moment? Seems there is a curious thing when it comes to phones and the net. You need 2 wires for the phone to work and only 1 for the net. We have had a wire pulled out by trees falling on it and we still have 1. When it gets really windy the net goes out as well as it pulls on the remaining cable but for now it’s here :). LOVE my dacks and the water tank is almost 3/4 full now! 🙂 Fried food is ALWAYS good so long as you don’t eat it every night. Wind is coming back now so best post this as we might lose our net. If it is still here tomorrow and its a bit less crazy up the back block we might try to protect what we have left (internet cable) but we aren’t risking our lives to do it now as someone was already killed by falling trees in Launceston today, we don’t want to make it 2 😦

Yes, I saw in the news that someone died as a result of the wild and woolly weather. 😦 Please be safe.
I also heard that Mr Abbott was unable to Land at Launceston airport due to the bad weather so not all bad news. 😉
Stay safe and warm and dry.

Yeah, all of his hot air must have met with all of our cold air and caused the cyclonic winds ;). A 63 year old lady was out with her husband on her property cutting up trees that had fallen down in the storm (while the storm was still going on…) and a tree fell on her 😦

Loved this post, reminded me of Spain so much with the cockerels! Weaselman sounds like a bit of a find – why is it I wonder when we all want hens, we end up with so many cocks?! maybe best not to reply to that 😉 Fish and chips and mushy peas – yum, and a fried/Japanese birthday extravaganza…you are a lucky narf 🙂

Now I understand all the Weasel-man references I saw earlier in the week. I’m glad your coop rounded down to a respectable and manageable number and that peace reigns once again at Serendipity Farm. You’re slice of life is so different from mine that I find myself hanging on every word. You live an interesting and enriching life on the S-Farm. Thanks for sharing your week.

Hi Brittany and welcome to Serendipity Farm :). Guess who is getting your gorgeous cake for her birthday next week! I asked Stevie-boy to make it for me and he is up for it so wish us luck. No raspberries here but I am sure that we can sub something equally as scrumptious 🙂 I get up at 3am as a rule as that gives me all of that delicious time to do whatever I want online in the peace and quiet of the early morning. I used to be a night person but am now firmly stuck in early mornings…all of that time and I am SO ready for my day by the time 7am rocks up 🙂

Certain that this hasn’t been a twinkle in your mind yet, but those gorgeous trousers match so, so well with your lovely salad bowl. We need a new pic of you both in view now that you’re not chasing the roosters. You never fail at making life a little bit fun and a lot like it should be – productive.

Ahh, the Hound would take one look at that toxic greenery and be all over it like a rat up a drainpipe. While she’s pure Jack Russell Terrorist, she’s dead keen on her vegies and is the only dog I have ever met who gets well over excited by peas (preferably frozen) and capsicum. When we were going to reform school, I was the only doggie owner who had capsicum and carrot for treats! She’s a little weird.

(PS: I’ve whipped up not one but two blog posts this evening!)

Lucky I am about to tackle my RSS Feed Reader then eh? 😉 Your dog eats veggies? Mine will only eat them if they are more than covered in their own weight in butter or if they steal them and chew them up but technically that isn’t eating them…that’s “redistributing their molecules all over the carpet” 😉 off to read those posts!

Was he the rooster whisperer-lol..sounds like he had a connection to those roosters. I have never lived with animals that I eat, I am a true city girl. I buy my meat in plastic wrapped flats-lol. I admire how you do it all! I did watch a friend butcher a chicken and then she served it for dinner, it tasted different????? or was it me that just never ate fresh chicken + it should taste like that!
So is this “wofati” house like an earth house? I have always wanted to find a hill some where and build my house into and garden on my roof-that would be my idea of a perfect life:-)
Your food always looks so good:-) I love the blue and white dishes, too:-) I am not so certain about the green mush like stuff so I am with the dog on that item-lol…always a delight to stop by and visit you on Serendipity farm…
oh , one last thing, do you remember the books for children ( when our kids were young) that were called Serendipidity…

You are right on the Weaselman/whisperer (only, unlike Caesar Millan, he didn’t have roller blades and didn’t go running with them 😉 ) front and the wofati as well. Sort of out of the ground at one end and earth heaped up on the other. A Hobbit house when you haven’t got a good hill to stuff it in ;).
That must have been an American thing as we never got those books. Might have to chase them up and check them out though. I feel like “that kid” missed out again! 😉 I am with you on those mushy peas. It’s a U.K. thing and Stevie-boy can have them whenever he feels like it so long as he doesn’t ask me to join him in eating them. Love only goes so far… 😉

I thoroughly enjoyed this post Fran! I cannot explain why but it is truly one of your finest writings! The way you wove the weaselman and chooks into a fascinating real life story with a pleasant ending for all, well, it was a true serendipity experience!

FD is a rooster wrangler too! When it is apparent we have too many young roosters in the flock, he gets the hooking pole out and is it ever a scene to watch! A truly talented rooster wrangler (or weaselman!) does not have to move around much. They use their keen eyes to snag a leg while countering the rooster’s next move. It truly is a sight to see!

Those trousers of yours ROCK! And I agree with christiglover about the “great tush”… that is what makes those pants rock! 😀

HAHAHA! Maybe I am missing my calling Ms Lori and should be applying to be Australia’s next top (middle aged) tushy model eh? 😉 I am with you on the weaselman and am entirely in awe of his prowess. How he could get into a small coop cram packed with chooks hell bent on getting out WITH crates and no chooks escaped. He hooked 33 of them and took them all away with minimal fuss. If FD is a weaselman, I figure they must be a top notch bunch of guys 🙂

Although I’ve been experiencing my coldest summer ever here in San Francisco, the temperature definitely doesn’t compare- I can’t imagine such a frigid July! All the same, you’ve definitely got the right idea for how to beat it. I could sure go for a huge bowlful of your vegetable soup, too, even if I don’t have nearly as nice dishware to enjoy it in. 😉

You’ve totally won me over with you super-comforting eats. What does it say about me if I’ve spend two months in basically foodie heaven, and all I want for dinner now is soup and mushy peas? I’d like to think that It’s a compliment to your cooking more than anything else!

🙂 I guess when you are invested in “food” 24/7 and photographing it from every angle and doing strange things to it to make it look AMAZING it loses it’s allure to a degree. Comfort food is amazing soothing soul satisfying stuff and to me, a big bowl of gorgeous homemade vegetable soup can soothe me like nothing else. Here’s hoping that your winter is mild this year to balance out your cold summer 🙂

It is completely different around here. The air of terror that the poor long suffering hens had affected was palpable in the air but now there is only 1 rooster who just bumbles around and rarely crows and the rest are all hens who are now happy, content, have taken over the large conifer that the roosters used to inhabit (to jump out on the hens) and life has returned to quiet calm contentment here :). Lubbly jubbly! 🙂 Steve is encouraging our beer batter experiments as not only does he get the delicious beer battered results (mushrooms, sweet potato, spring onions (whole) and broccoli last night) but he gets the remainder of the beer as well! Bonus! 😉
