Reality Checker

Hi All,

I came up with the premise for this blog post while I was walking Earl dressed in 3 layers of mismatched clothing with a “Dad’s Army” (look it up, better still head over to YouTube and watch an episode…) beanie pulled down over my head and when I looked in the mirror (after reading this post YOU tell me which mirror I looked in 😉 ) I looked like a man disguised as a bag lady…NOT a good look! Here’s the haiku that I used to remember everything that I wanted to add to the first part of this post while I walked the 5km home…the bag lady/man and her dog…

“Mirror on the wall

Fabulous Dorian Grey

Reality Check”

It pays to have a system whereby you can remember something you really REALLY want to remember if you don’t have a pen and paper handy to write it down or, like in my case, your fingers are frozen stiff and you can’t feel them enough to get out the pen and paper and even if you could your dog is champing at the bit to forge on ahead and one hand stretched out at right angles to the body is NOT going to let you write anything easily…I don’t usually affect haiku’s, just this time I didn’t want to sing it loudly all the way home (my preferred method of memory booster) as Earl was hunting wabbits and was giving me evil’s …

One of the lovely abalone shells that was left over from Steve’s happy abalone meal last week

DSCF0023

A much more humble but just as delicious meal consisting of the above (cooked pasta and scrumptious slow cooked bolognaise sauce) and topped with a very rich cheesy sauce and baked.

Have you got a reality check? You know…that friend/husband/dog that won’t let your head swell up too big and are able to ensure that you remain a stable and useful human being without expecting the world to bow before you as you walk down the street and strew rose petals at your feet. My reality check is a mirror. I have 2 mirrors that I regularly look in. I have a large mirror on the lounge-room wall that I stand on a sofa to see how I look all over in but that’s just for going out and as I tend to only go out once in a blue moon it’s not to be included in my “regular” viewing  for the purposes of this post.

DSCF0011

This is Jemima. Daughter of Hildabooch. Note her aunt Jemima headscarf and the scull and crossbones was to warn guests at a very upmarket wine tasting evening that Jemima was NOT to be imbibed, well not yet. She has some fermenting to do for Ms Florida her new owner and mistress. Long may she ferment!

My first mirror is a simple wooden framed mirror that hangs in the bathroom. I call this mirror my “FABULOUS SWEETIE” mirror as when I look in it, I AM fabulous. I wash my face, I comb (who am I kidding, I need a stiff broom to get through these locks!) my hair and I slap on some olive oil face cream and all the while this mirror soothes my ego. “Not looking too bad for an old girl (said whilst winking at myself and cocking a finger  in my facial direction). Not bad at all. I look for signs of grey hair, nothing obvious, I can’t see many wrinkles and can’t see any big ones (not that I have had my eyes checked lately) and after brushing my teeth and seeing how sparkling clean and white they look I head off full of possibilities and all is right with my ego in Serendipity Ville

DSCF0025

I didn’t realise that Steve had taken this photo. I almost deleted it but realised that this is me…saggy bottomed track pants and all and so for the sake of honesty, here is narf7 completely unaware that Stevie-boy is on the prowl with his camera

The second mirror is a bollocks. I have NO idea why but every…single…time that I look in this mirror I come away feeling deflated. Even a quick glance (because I forgot to “NEVER LOOK IN THAT BLOODY MIRROR AGAIN!”) Yields mild depression. I appear to have been taken over by a middle aged woman with wrinkles! I can see grey hairs alright and they seem to have been joined by their best friends split ends (not the band…just sayin’…). For the record this mirror is also surrounded by a simple wooden frame so it can’t be the frame that is acting as some kind of torture device. It’s not like I am vain. I have never been able to trade on my looks to win me friends or influence people; it’s just that this mirror is so VERY frank. No muted edges to soften the blow. No pat on the head in sympathy as I blow my nose just “it is what it is”.

DSCF7955

Here we have brownies…well technically apple blondies. I would like to say that they were the terrible “M” word that food bloggers are not allowed to use any more but I can’t it is verboten, so I headed off to good old Google to look up a synonym for the “M” word and got “damp, steamy, humid, muggy, clammy, dank, wet, dewy, dripping, soggy, sweaty, sticky…” err…not entirely sure that muggy or clammy or dank brownies are going to sell a recipe but you get my drift!

DSCF7959

Here is a closer shot of them in all of their dank glory…emmm 😉

That second mirror is my reality checker. The mirror that should be locked away in a wardrobe or better still in the roof cavity (note to self…”put that bloody mirror in the roof cavity!”) While I gaze adoringly into that first mirror that tells me that everything is hunky dory on the beauty stakes and I am GORGEOUS sweetie. The problem is that I like to be honest with myself. I COULD take that mirror off the wall but there is a strange beauty in knowing the truth. In being able to look at yourself wearing a dad’s army hat with your greying temples and your wrinkles waving back at you (are those frown lines?!) and STILL be happy with yourself. When you can accept that you look like a bag lady/man and can still be happy with your lot who can burst your bubble? Honestly? 🙂

DSCF7963

These two could care less that I look like a bag lady/man, all they want is a W.A.L.K. STAT!

I had best head off and make myself some breakfast. I am STILL PROCRASTINATING. It’s 8.52am and the sun is shining and the sky is blue and I am SO tempted to just head out into the veggie garden and shovel that whole trailer load of horse manure into wheelbarrows and ferry it back and forth and make a new garden bed but I promised myself that I would finish off my swatch sticking today and a promise is a promise, even if it is only to yourself. Wish me luck folks…I am going in!

DSCF7972

Another batch of Friday calzones gets made. Here they are in all of their raw glory. Note the coloured flecks in the dough. That’s because I add dried Italian mixed herbs, chilli and Parmesan cheese to the dough to make them extra tasty

DSCF7975

This is what they look like cooked…and sideways…that’s what happens when you ask your impatient husband to re-size an image for you. Technically he did re-size it, just didn’t turn it 😉

I did it! It took me over a week of procrastination but it’s done and dusted now. Finito…until the next study thing that I have to procrastinate about. Why am I procrastinating? Because I reckon I can’t justify the waste of paper, time and energy spent sticking little bits of coloured paper onto more paper for absolutely nothing. It’s not like I am learning much about colours, I learned most of what I know back in kindergarten, but it’s the complete waste of time and energy doing something that means absolutely NOTHING to me that makes me want to roll my socks, move the furniture and take up the drink. Steve is the most creative out of the two of us and he proved it yesterday when he took his paint swatches and cut them out into shapes. We had to do a “mood board” of “Our Lifestyle”.  I just took colours and stuck them together in clumps to represent things like “river and soil and sun and sky” and “the colours of our dogs and our water tank and my optimism (which is apparently butter yellow according to the swatch)” etc. but Stevie-boy knocked it out of the ballpark. There are little green wine bottles and small brown beer bottles and the mumbly cumumbus and his river has layers of colour and looks like ripples…clever bollocks! 😉

DSCF7981

I took a few photos of the duck because I am a sentimental old duck myself. As you can see she has a problem standing up

DSCF7983

That didn’t stop her from dragging herself more quickly than I can run into the agapanthus

Well the sticking is finished but now I am up to my dry eyeballs in research. I mean who needs to know how the flash in their camera works for goodness sake! Me apparently… anyhoo, after this we are getting onto the meaty stuff…more design culminating in making a booklet and THAT is where narf7 sits up and takes notice…”Booklet you say eh?” yup…booklet. I am quaffing booch in order to keep me awake. It keeps me awake by igniting my need to run at regular intervals to the loo. The house is lovely and toasty warm thanks to Brunhilda and her ability to convert her food into latent heat. Bezial has been lulled into somnolence but Earl is sitting next to me beseeching me to feed him. No point even trying till Bezial could be bothered to wake up so I have one asleep and one sulking. You are never child free when you have dogs

DSCF7984

On the floor in the car just before I handed her over. The bag was to stop her from getting scared but she certainly doesn’t look scared

DSCF7985

“Goodbye duck”… even if she was euthanised her sacrifice might mean that her brothers and sisters get liberated. I feel like I am in Le Miserable!

Well the weather has certainly changed. So I should have, we are in the last month of autumn. This morning I walked Earl in 0C temperatures and we headed over the Batman bridge at a fast trot in order to maintain our body temperatures and not succumb to hypothermia. I haven’t been over the bridge since I last took grain over for the chickens that had been dumped in the park on the other side of the river and found the mother chicken had been killed by a quoll. I took some grain today just in case any of her babies were still there and looking down from the bridge I did see some small dark shapes running around but they might have been swamp hens. When we got to the park Earl stopped dragging and started insisting. Insisting is fast dragging by the way, just sos you know… I skated behind him down the steep descent and managed to pull him sideways into the car park and bbq area where I thought I might have seen those small chooks. Whether I did or not, at least the swamp hens could have some grain. As I was tipping it out around the rubbish bins (as that is obviously where they would check on a regular basis) I caught something large moving around in the undergrowth out of the corner of my eye. I moved over to the other rubbish bin that was a bit closer to the area that the movement had been and peered (myopically) into the shrubbery and realised that I was looking into the beak of a large peacock! At least something will eat that grain!

DSCF0056

Jan (in the blue) and Kim (the other one) who I attempted to show how to blog to the other day. We had a lovely afternoon and although Kims blog was up and running and raring to go in about 15 minutes, Jan’s was a bit more trouble but we sorted it all out in the end and everyone can now blog to their hearts content

DSCF0057

Kim blogging to her hearts content…Jan…not so much…

I just squealed on someone. Aussies don’t do “squeal” lightly…again…just sos you know. But this man deserved a very loud squeal and a half. He lives up behind our property and keeps poultry. He has taken to not feeding his chooks and ducks and they have been wandering around in search of food and getting killed on the roads. I was walking back on Monday with Earl from our early morning walk and noticed a duck on the side of the road. I was surprised because I thought that they had all been killed off but no, there was a duck but it looked like it, too, had been hit by a car as it couldn’t stand up. I knew that I couldn’t do anything with Earl with me so I raced home and deposited Earl on the deck and drove back up to where I had seen the duck with a cardboard box and an old cloth to cover the duck. If it had been hit I was going to bring it home and if it died at least it would die on Serendipity Farm with a nice view surrounded by chooks, not on the side of the road. I pulled over (should have checked my rear view mirror as the school bus almost hit me 😉 ) and headed over to pick up the duck and it bit me. A good sign, as that means it still has some chutzpah left. A good duck needs it’s chutzpah.

DSCF0059

Kims wonderful locally made little wood fire. It was made 18km away in Exeter. Can’t get more community supportive than that. If I had known that we HAD a fireplace maker here in Tassie, let alone in Exeter, I may not have purchased Brunhilda. This lovely fire has a very large pizza type oven at the top and is gloriously good at warming Kims gorgeous eco home

DSCF0061

I am dead jel. Kim has a wonderful composting loo! It has 6 chambers underneath and by the time it has finished it’s cycle (takes about 2 months) they end up with wonderful compost that they can use in their garden.

After noticing that the duck couldn’t walk I picked it up and was shocked to note that it weight nothing. It was like picking up a skeleton with feathers. The poor thing was starving! I brought it back home and deposited it in our outdoor enclosure. None of our lot are in there at the moment as they are all free ranging and giving Frank apoplexy with their crowing so I put lots of straw and food and water near a stand of agapanthus and the duck moved in. That night I was worried about it so I put lots of hay into Earls carry case (that he arrived in Tasmania in from South Australia where we bought him from) and deposited the angry duck (anger, like chutzpah is also a good sign in a duck) into the cage where it settled down. I didn’t think that it would last the night but it did and the next morning I made up my mind to report this man to our animal welfare society for animal cruelty.

DSCF0050

Who needs a moth eaten sock under the bed Brunhilda needs her gustatory platter and this time, it was delivered right to the top of our driveway. I LOVE you Mr wood delivery man (just so he knows 😉 )

After I had reported him an officer came to take the duck. They needed to take it to the vet to check it out and to see if there was a case against the man. When the officer picked the duck up to place it into a carrier she remarked about how light it was and how unhealthy it was. When people take on the responsibility for animals they need to be aware that the word “responsible” is the key here. If you can’t afford (or just plain don’t want) to feed your animals or care for them then DON’T GET ANIMALS! People have been rumbling about complaining about this situation for about a year now. He used to have a lot of ducks. I think that the poor emaciated duck that headed off with the animal welfare officer yesterday may just have been the last. All the rest of them have been killed on the road. Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to have animals…ever.

DSCF7966

This is what real love looks like. Real love is when someone is walking up the driveway after checking the mail and sees a flower on a shrub and decides that he is going to pick it and give it to his wife because he wants to make her happy. Guess what Stevie-boy, I am going to let you off your past transgressions for this 🙂

DSCF7970

This is what real love looks like on steroids. When a man goes into a shop full of women and stands in front of a large collection of wool in order to buy his wife 10 balls so that she can “make something” as he knows that she loves to be creative and even though he is INCREDIBLY impatient, he has been shopping all morning and is completely OVER the city he stopped off to buy me some wool because he knew that it would make me happy. Now THAT is real love. None of that mushy stuff with chocolates (can’t eat them) and roses (can’t eat them) and fluffy kitties (Earl eats them) and such, no THIS is what love is down at the coal face where 2 imperfect people learn how to tap-dance around each other for the rest of their lives without killing each other and slowly learning just how amazing it can be to hold someone elses heart in the palm of your hand (and that ISN’T the end result of me watching too much Crime Channel…)

So here I am back to having 1 duck who thinks that it is a chook. I thought that I might be able to train her back into duckanese but apparently not. Even if the poor emaciated girl doesn’t get put down (:( ) she will be taken to a foster home for ducks. Not entirely sure what a foster home for ducks is but anything is better than where she was. The dogs just had their dinner (I was like a stealth ninja, you didn’t even realise that I had gone did you) and I think I might put this edition to bed now folks. I am thinking that tonight might be a good night to create something scrumptious for Stevie-boy who has been an absolute trouper about chopping wood when I have been doing my level best to burn it all as fast as he chops it. From the blog posts that I have been reading lately it would seem that we are all in winter now. Most of my northern readers are complaining about cold, rain and even snow and we are revelling in frost and the joys of dripping noses. I guess that means that we can all have a HUGE communal worldwide weenie roast! I bags the vego weenies…

I thought that duck was your ducky at first. What mean buggers roam this earth eh. Well said btw, if you can’t/ won’t look after animals then don’t have them. Poor thing, hope she ends up in ducky daycare 🙂
I love the flower, how lovely that must have been. Makes the heart burst with sweetness and I can hear the people reading going Awwwww in unison 🙂
I like the wood fire come pizza cooker too. Bet it smells amazing when it has one cooking in there.
I have brought some chicken bones to make some stock! I haven’t made it from scratch before, so wish me luck and send me a recipe if you have an amazing one, I bet you do… I don’t suppose they change much??
It’s been wet and cold here too, snuggle weather 😀 x

Stevie-boy knows that I am bolshie about flowers. If a man gives me flowers all it does is make me suspicious! I marry men who aren’t naturally romantic and so flowers = guilt! 😉 He knew that I would love that little rhododendron as it has just started to flower again and we thought that we had lost it in the long hot summer…a sign of struggle and survival, just like real love :). I LOVE that little fire…not so little really, it came up to my shoulder! It has little holes all over the outside covered with attractive metal mesh that allow the heat to waft out blissfully and that oven is HUGE and could be used to roast things and bake etc. The only thing is that it probably doesn’t have the temperature control that I have with Brunhilda so you would have to learn your oven first but that isn’t a bad thing :). Stock is easy peasy. Go with Pinkies stock recipe (on her blog) it’s the bomb! I just boil up chook bones, throw in a couple of halved (leave the skins on) onions, about 6 carrots (again, don’t bother to peel them just halve them and toss them in) and any other veggies that you want to add. I just toss in a few peppercorns as they add a real something and let it boil for about an hour to 2 hours then remove any meat from the carcasses/bones and add back to the soup and remove the veggies and voila blissful stock ready to go. You can freeze it then or just carry on and make soup with it 🙂 Not wet here, very dry at the moment but 0C is nothing to be sneezed at! The problem is that the dogs have been “tooting” for want of a less offensive word 😉 and I usually leave the doors open but it is TOO COLD so dog “toots” are stinking up the house! 😉 I just lit my oil burners in order to try to stem the tide…ewww! 🙂

The man up the back is about 70, is a VERY grouchy old swine and never veers very far from his property. He is that old bee keeper and he certainly won’t know who dobbed him in as just about everyone has had a run in with him over the poor ducks that kept getting hit on the road. Every morning you could hear cars tooting as they tried to avoid the ducks. Most of them were hit and killed but this duck was the very last straw with me. I don’t like to judge people but this man doesn’t deserve to have animals Pinky, this duck was literally starving and was just skin and bones. It almost broke my heart to hand her over as I have the strong suspicion that they put her down, she was pretty far gone but SO full of feisty life. If his animals are taken off him at least she won’t have died for nothing 😦

        May 08, 2014 @ 10:48:09

I might be willing to dob him in but I am not so sure I am up to fibbing to have him committed…just talked to our neighbours and they said that they had gone up years ago (about 10 years ago) to buy some raspberries off them and the house was disgusting and smelled of horrific things…they never bought raspberries from there again. Can’t be all that much better now and my guess is that he has just given up caring about anything now and the ducks and chooks are the least of his concern. Bit sad really but maybe I am doing him a favour as this way he can just surrender them up and not have to worry about them any more (if he was worrying), either way, something had to be done and I was very sad for that poor little ducky too Pinky, she was only young 😦

Yeah, your right Fronkiii. Still, if he is not coping, surely there is some family of his somewhere that should be caring about his state of living? Maybe he’s ostracised from them by choice.

I know exactly what you mean by mirrors. Actually, both my own are ok, giving back a not doing so badly for my age reflection… but when I go to my friends I look about ten years older and a stone heavier. Explain that then! I’m sticking with mine. I keep telling my friend that it is doing her no favours as she is underconfident about the way she looks…but you can lead a horse to water… Keep warm Fran 🙂

Oh, the poor duck and good n you for doing something.

You made me laugh with your talk of mirrors and reality checks. We only have one mirror here, on the front of the bathroom cabinet. The bathroom is dim and I need glasses to see up close so to me, if I bother looking in the mirror at all, I always look a blurry “OK”. Roger had a doctors apt 3/4 hr away and I went for a drive, while sitting in the car I noticed a chemist and shot over to grab a lippy because I was out. So I put my glasses on to read labels and prices, try a few, see one i like and go over to a mirror to try one on. To have not seen yourself properly for many years then be faced with an image in a magnified mirror with your glasses on is one rude awakening!! Roger came out of the doctors and I was sitting in the car again but too upset to talk lol.
Nice to know Steve is another man who loves right 🙂 🙂 He and Roger sound very similar and I can relate to the he chops/she burns bit here.

I get the feeling that Roger and Steve are very similar critters and that you and I were VERY lucky when they decided to alight in our vicinity and stick around :). I guess I have had an uneasy truce with mirrors ever since they stopped screaming “WHALE!” at me in changing rooms. Having lived most of my life hiding from them, a few wrinkles, grey hairs and the odd moment where I look like a bag lady/man are nothing compared to the terror that is a changing room mirror! 😉 I would have scrawled “NOOOOOOO!” on the mirror in bright pink lippy and run screaming from the shop! 😉

I agree we are VERY lucky, everything is ok when you have a good and loving man beside you – even when you are crying in a car apologising because you didn’t realise how old you had got. I can laugh about it now but this was only 6 months ago and took ages to get over!
I am not at all fond of dressing room mirrors, a good portion of my dislike of clothes shopping stems from those things. You would think shops would invest in decent quality mirrors just to sell more stock.

Not quite to the apologising about age bit but by the time I am there, he will be there right alongside me, grey beard and all so that would be me protesting the inevitable ;). I HATE dressing room mirrors but not as bad as I used to.

Love that little bit of soft-centre heart that peeked out in this post – ducks, yarn and flowers will get you every time!

I have mirrors like yours too. I wonder if it is a rule? I have a full length bedroom mirror, which when I stand dead straight to makes me look elegant and serene and fuzzy edged – though that may be my failing eyesight! I start each day admiring myself in that mirror and all goes well until I catch a glimpse in the bathroom one – or even worse in that little box in the corner on Skype – when all my elegant, fuzzy edged serenity disappears in harsh clear cut lines of wobbly bits and extra bits and wrinkly bits……….. It certainly is a shock for the poor ego! Mine gets shocked a lot these days 🙂

I couldn’t think what the ‘m’ word was, then decided it must be ‘morish’. When you came up with your synonyms I thought you must have mis-spelled it ‘moorish’ See how doggedly my mind works when I have made my decision? 🙂 Thank heaven someone else mentioned ‘moist’. 🙂

As president, and currently only registered member, of Stevie-Boy’s fan club I am expecting an in-rush of new followers after the flower episode and the wool episode. As president I also feel compelled to point out to you that ‘photo enlarging’ is not necessarily a term that includes ‘photo rotating’. To be fair to our hero one must be specific ‘rotate and enlarge’.

Not enough bits when you are young and could handle a few more and way too many when you get older…thems the breaks I guess, makes it harder for the wolverines to keep hold of us and we can make a hurried get away while they are clamped to those bits of us that decided to call it quits and age, better off in the wolverine than on me! ;). Works for Earl (lots of extra skin around his neck), works for me ;). I reckon as soon as Steve cottons on that he “has” a fan club he is going to start using you as back up in every one of our disagreements…”well Pauline said…”…LOL! forgedaboudit Stevie-boy, might be your fan club but the lady is NOT for turning as someone far more vehement and angsty once said 😉

LOL! Good excuse…might have to start using it to get out of having to go into that mirrored hall of fear ever again “Steve…you can’t expect a vegan to set foot into the butchers!” 😉 Good one Jane! I will be using that from now on 🙂

I am not sure but apparently “moist” is akin to talking about bodily functions in cooking blog circles. I love moist cake too and preferably without icing or anything to ruin that unctuous enjoyment. You are right, there aren’t any other words and they probably are reading too much into the word (or watching too much porn…) either way, “get over it you lot, cake is MOIST!” well, good cake is 🙂 I hope that the duck man has been dealt with appropriately as the ranger went around there yesterday. Fingers crossed he surrenders them all up and no more ducks or chooks have to cark it on the road because he could care less about being a good owner :(. I won’t go into the butchers. I keep stepping back for the old lady to go first…it’s me! 😉

Haha, I didn’t realize that the “M” word was so offensive! Oh dear, reading some of my posts must be like listening to nails on a chalkboard, because I certainly haven’t censored myself in the past. No matter how you describe it though, your blondies do look fantastic- Just the perfect texture.

I remember when I was a young girl, a friend of my mom’s told me, “Honey, you have it “goin on” right now and you’d better enjoy it. There will come a day when you look in the mirror, and the goin on will be gone”. I understand that now. It’s not the same… somewhere in the late forties, or maybe the early fifties it was as if someone flipped a switch. It’s ok though. I just flash a smile. Smiles never age. They’re beautiful!

I’m so glad you saved the duck. It matters not what happens after this – it’s the act of kindness that you extended. I think animals read our energy. I think that duck knew your kindness.

I don’t know a thing about moist being a bad thing. Seriously, I haven’t seen this on any blogs I follow. Of course, I’m well known to be the last one to find out about anything – hermit that I am!

That duck tried to get away from me but when I picked it up I looked in its eyes and told it that I wasn’t going to hurt it. I completely believe that I saw comprehension there and the duck stopped struggling and let me put it into a box. I felt terrible giving it over to the RSPCA lady but I didn’t have a choice, they had to have it checked by a vet in order to see if it actually was being neglected and not fed. I hope that it could be rehabilitated and wasn’t euthanised. Yeah, “moist” is apparently a TERRIBLE word now. No idea why myself as moist is a whole lot better than dry in my book when it comes to cake 😉 I never had it going on so it didn’t hit me hard when it decided to up and go away. Stevie-boy isn’t here because of my face, he is here because of “me” and everything that makes me so. I reckon the biggest problem we are going to have (touch wood) is remembering each others names when we are in our 90’s 😉

I’m so sad about the ducks! How could anyone be so cruel? Thanks for caring, Narf! I was so pleased to see you called in help. I just hope the poor little critter gets another chance at a good life! Weep! Weep!
I want your mirror – the good one – because all the mirrors in my house wickedly reflect a person I’ve never seen before – and would not want to meet in a dark alley! Our house is haunted by pudgy, wrinkly, pale looking women who shock you when you look in the mirror. So, I gave up doing so about five years ago. Shop dressing room visits stopped about 14 years ago – now it’s op shop clothing for $3 and if it doesn’t fit when I get home, I pass it on to a friend or recycle it through another op shop! He, he! So sad – but we’re all in the same boat!! We should really embrace our new look – and wear it with pride!! Ha! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

“The intercontinental ladies who thrift”. Sounds like a damned good moniker to moi! You know how Bill Mollison called himself a guerrilla gardener by tossing those seed bombs into parks and gardens etc? Well I think it’s time for me to be the vigilante narf who tosses the shop fitting mirrors into parks and gardens. I think I might have just discovered a niche for prospective employment…how many women would pay me to dispose of them eh? 😉

Well, I’m late to the table, as usual these days! Love your haiku mnemonic device, and I am so with you on the mirrors of reality. My skin is aging before my eyes in the tropics, tanning, wrinkling, outlining what was already there but frozen and covered in long underwear and scarves. I notice my mouth especially, the wrinkles around the lips, the sag of the jaw. And my hair is huge here, but still speckled with gray. Keith says it’s redder and longer here, but he’s lovesick.

We’re still transitioning, but have upgraded our digs to the “lodge” where we have electricity and better internet. I love electricity. And a fan!! 2/3 of the world lives without electricity…is that possible? We have ordered our solar panels for the Hippie House, and will be off-grid, and will have to be very mindful of our usage (propane stove and fridge), but a couple of fans are a very high priority.

Love your observation about never being child free with a dog. Love your rescue of the duck. Love your love of Steve. Love you.

I hope that man loses all his animals, he doesn’t deserve them. Fingers crossed for the duck being rehoused.
I hope you have a lovely mums day. It’s the second one where I find myself without the boys… will just have to put up with kisses and waggy tails from the puppalups 😀
I plan to make my chicken stock tomorrow. I have found a really easy recipe for a lovely treat/desert. It only needs choc ripple biscuits, philly cream cheese, sugar, eggs and baileys irish cream. Yum, super easy and delish. Their like little cheese cakey thingies.

Her recipe is a Maggie Beer or Stephanie Alexander one so it would be a goody. Yummo on that cheesecake bicky thingo, sounds wonderful. Let me know how they turn out if you get any and Bruce doesn’t eat them all! Our car just died hauling horse poo and the RAC man is here but he isn’t very happy about being called out on Mother’s Day…Oh well…them’s the breaks! Hopefully he will haul it to our mechanics and we can get it sorted out ASAP. A most exciting Mother’s Day and it hasn’t even started yet! 😉

I wanted to stop by tonight, before I headed off to bed here in our part of the world. We celebrated mother’s day today + it was a nice time with my two kids ( one lives in UK + we don’t see her too often)that live here in the Midwest, my husband + my second grandson who is 11 months old( other grandson is 2 and lives in UK), so it was a nice time:-) We played some board + card games after we had dinner. …..I Hate mirrors! It is a “love” or “hate” relationship for me,too. Sometimes I don’t mind what I see, but other times I am not too happy!!! I do not consider myself a vain person, so I really don’t pay too much attention to what I see since it is more about “how” I feel. Sometimes mirrors can be deceptive and other times a mirror can be a bit too detailed-lol. As I get older, I see myself changing on the surface, but feeling the same inside.
I am not afraid to get older, I just don’t like how the world looks at older people. In some cultures older people are respected, but in other cultures ( like ours) they are seen as “old” and what do they know. I wish it were different, but I would love to turn on the TV or see advertisments with more gray haired people that are enjoying life….why is it always about being young….why is it all about the smooth face, what is wrotn with etched faces!!!!
I use to look at my father’s hands when I was in high school and think, ” I hope my hands have those detailed veins. I thought they were neat. Now I don’t like them on me!!!!-lol. Funny how life changes as you get older…

Good for you for telling on that man!!!! And you are a sweetie to go and get the duck:-)

With you on the hands thing…Mine are starting to look like the surface of the moon ;). I figure I earned these wrinkles and hands, I spent time out in the sun living and these are all reminders, like notes in a notebook or entries in a diary that I lived and enjoyed it 🙂

ain’t that the truth!!!! I think hands that are smooth and never look like they worked a day in life are boring, so we can apply that to faces, too. If you lived life laughing, smiling and comforting than your face will show it….my face is an expression of how I lived my life!!! great analogy–“entries in a diary” love it!!!

Wow, you certainly have a full life. Baking, rescuing ducks, walking dogs, standing on the sofa, ha, stoking the fire AND Blogging. I get slightly out of breath just reading all about the antic’s at chez Serendipity.

Your mirror antics made me laugh. I vote for moving ‘bad mirror’ I have a counter mirror that magnifies 13 x. There is no sugar coating to be had. I used to have a 8 x and couldn’t see well with it anymore so this was the next one up. I even take it with me when I travel, since I can’t what’s happening see without it.

Bravo Steve-boy for being so sweet to bring home treasures from near and far. It’s nice to learn someone thought of you so lovingly in the middle of their day. Isn’t it fun to spoil each other with simple things. A nice pan of Apple Blondie begat skeins of wool and so each other feels appreciated and loved. BTW, what on earth is the verboten ‘M’ word? LOL, I must have missed something.

You’re my kind of gal to head out to ravines to leave feed. I can’t say I’d be peering into any shrubbery, especially near trash bins. In Canada, it’d likely be something you might not want to find. Like a Coyote, skunk, bear or even a cougar. Although cougars are generally in the mountains, they have been spotted around Edmonton.

I’m relieved to hear you phoned the authorities on the neighbour. There is absolutely no reason to have let those poor animals wander hungry and be hit on roads and such. I’m very sad to hear they suffered such neglect, it’s really terrible. I hate it. Someone surely would have been happy to take them off his hands. It’s just maddening and senseless.

To end on a positive note, Does Earl look like he was caught doing something in that photo? He seems to not want to make eye contact. Tehe. Those guys are darn cute and make great story fodder. Have a great week Narf!

The verboten “M” word is M.O.I.S.T. apparently a very VERY disgusting word that can’t be used in polite food blogging circles. I doubt a cougar would be hanging about waiting for narf7’s to deliver the weekly grain rations but you just never know! (Note to self…take a BIG stick as well as Earl next time you cross the Batman Bridge!)…Earl can be almost guaranteed to be doing something naughty. Today, Bezial came shuffling in and started rubbing his nose on my leg which means “err…excuse me madam…you know that other dog? That one that you SHOULDN’T HAVE BOUGHT! That one? Well he is doing something naughty outside that you may or may not want to check out…just sayin’…please don’t inform said (unwanted) dog that I mentioned it to you in passing” and that is my signal to hightail it out and find whatever Earl is up to because Bezial only dobs when he KNOWS that Earl is up to no good…sure enough, Earl had found 2 bags of potting mix under a bench on the deck and was doing them a disservice with his beak (had just about shredded the plastic down to the soil line when I caught the little bugger!)…You have a great week to Ms Boom…I am posting another blog post today full of the hilarity of Mother’s Day and pretty much nothing else aside from some serious procrastination brought about by another looming study deadline…sigh…

By the way…is the outside world blurry to everyone else or do I need glasses?!!! Must be the former! I am too YOUNG TO NEED GLASSES…ahem…

LOL, No the outside word is not blurry…HA! Narf, get your butt to the drug store and see if any of those glasses at the pharmacy help. You might surprise yourself next time you look in the mirror. You’ll have a drop dead knock-out looking back at you 😀 If you lose them running down ravines, no loss cause they’re cheap. My glasses were crazy expensive. But I need blended lenses (which use to be bifocals). They’re transitional lenses which means they become sunglasses outside because I can’t take bright light at all and they’re scratch resistant cause I’m a klutz…..oh and they’re anti-clare so I can drive with them too. I also had a sun shade made for them but already busted those up when they fell on the road and a truck drove over them right before my very own ‘blurry’ eyes :/

Well, if laughing keeps us young and healthy, I’m set for quite a while! As usual, your post is entertaining and thought-provoking. That flower was so sweet; (we are what we give, right?) 😉

Glad you rescued a fellow ducky; it’s so sad to see mistreated animals (or kids); I agree that if you don’t want to care for them, don’t get them; go visit them at some caring owner’s home.

As to MOI8T!!! I will never quit using that word. People have gotten so odd it makes me wonder if some really are aliens in disguise . . . and on that note, here’s a Canadian band named (you guessed it!) MOIST:

And I’m with you on dry cake; then you have to pour cream or something very like over it just so it doesn’t choke you.

Mirrors: I have one I love, too; it’s in storage for now. It has ancient silvered backing that is very spotty and gives me a lovely golden/silvery patina. Glosses over the signs left by the stresses of the past couple of decades and I look and feel as I used to do . . . I’m thinking we should start a bolshie brigade and sneak into changing rooms and paste up lovely long posters of gorgeous older women . . . and use paste that won’t come off . . . 🙂

Thanks again for the smiles and belly laughs . . . they do a body good! ~ Linne
